Many people work very hard to reach their health and physical goals. Diet and exercise often provide the means for them to achieve the health and appearance goals they are looking for. However, even with diet and exercise, there are sometimes areas of the body that cannot seem to be fixed. Small pockets of fat or cellulite tend to remain even after reaching weight goals.
Cellulite is a persistent area of fat, deep under the connective tissue that can put pressure on the skin and cause unsightly dimpling. Even with diet and exercise, these areas can remain. Fortunately, fat freezing cellulite treatment, also known as cryolipolysis, lipo-freeze and CoolSculpting, is one method that can provide a method for how to get rid of cellulite and stubborn pockets of fat. Whats the secret? Cryolipolysis will actually freeze away cellulite.
How Does Fat Freezing (Cryolipolysis) Work?
Freezing away cellulite is a relatively new method of treating cellulite. Cryolipolysis is used on areas that have pockets of fat or cellulite that do not go away with normal cellulite treatments. This treatment is not for removing excessive amounts of fat or to aid in weight-loss. It is strictly for the removal of stubborn fat in small areas around the abdomen, thighs, buttocks, and other small problem areas.
Often considered to be one of the better cellulite treatments available today, this method actually freezes the fat cells under the skin. This causes the cells to die. Over the next several weeks, the body naturally removes these cells. The ultimate results are a smoother, more sculpted area. By using fat freezing at these stubborn areas of fat, you can see a significant reduction in cellulite. Since the fat is removed, it is no longer pushing on the skin causing the unsightly dimpling.
Is Fat Freezing Painful?
This treatment is considered non-invasive. There is no cutting or surgical activity during the procedure. The cryolipolysis treatment utilizes applicators on the targeted tissue to freeze the tissue and fat cells to a controlled temperature range of -11 to +5. During the procedure you may feel intense cold during the first few minutes, but normally the area goes numb within a few minutes after the procedure starts.
Some cryolipolysis procedures utilize vacuum-cup applicators to suction excess fat into the cup and freeze the targeted tissue. After the procedure, you may feel some tingling in the targeted area for a few minutes. However, most patients are able to return to normal activity immediately after the appointment. You may expect some redness, bruising, itching, or skin sensitivity after the procedure, but these usually subside within a few days.
Each treatment will take between 35-60 minutes. The doctor will discuss with you how to get rid of cellulite with these treatments. Some patients can have multiple treatments at once and can even have multiple areas treated in one visit. The doctor will discuss how many treatments are needed of cryolipolysis.
Often, a few treatments are all that are needed to ensure cryolipolysis will freeze away cellulite. In as little as three weeks, you will begin to see results with the most dramatic results at two months. However, it will take four to six months to see the complete results.

Is Fat Freezing FDA Approved?
Yes, cryolipolysis will freeze away cellulite and did get its first clearance from the FDA to be approved in 2010. This approval was for the removal of fat around the sides of the body, or the “love handles”. As of today the CoolSculpting procedure is approved to remove fat bulges from many areas of the body:
- Thigh
- Abdomen
- Flank (lower back)
- Fat removal underneath the buttocks
- Upper arm,
- Bra fat

What Are The Side Effects of Fat Freezing?
With almost everything, there are side effects and risks to consider before getting any treatment.
Pain, Stinging, or Aching At The Treatment Site
This often starts soon after treatment and usually went away in three days but have been known to last up to eleven days.
Temporary Redness, Swelling, Bruising, and Skin Sensitivity
This is caused by exposing the skin to the cold temperatures.
Stick of Butter Effect
A very rare condition but one of the more serious side effects of this treatment is called Paradoxical Adipose Hyperplasia, also known as Stick of Butter Effect. This occurs when instead of the fat cells shrinking in the area, they actually grow. The fat cells can harden and swell. They have been sometimes shown to take the shape of the device used to freeze the fat.
This cryolipolysis side effect is not physically dangerous but can be bothersome for patients. Fortunately, this area can be treated to remove these cells. It is also important to discuss with your doctor any health conditions you may have before getting this procedure. Conditions, such as cryoglobulinemia, cold agglutinin disease, and paroxysmal cold hemoglobinuria, can exclude patients from being a candidate for this procedure. Talking to your doctor can help determine if this procedure is right for you and your body goals.
What Are The Costs of Fat Freezing?
Cryolipolysis will freeze away cellulite but its important to understand the costs. The cryolipolysis cost depends a lot on the type of treatment you are receiving and how many you will need to meet your personal goals. The cryolipolysis price is very dependent upon the area or areas that need treatment. However, the CoolSculpting price can range between 2,000 and 4,000 USD.
Your doctor can provide you a full assessment to determine the problem areas. Once complete with the assessment, the doctor can identify the number of treatments you will need to reach your goal. The doctor can then give you a quote on the cryolipolysis cost for your specific treatment.
